My shop truck is a family owned, since new 1973 Ford F250. Affectionately named Old Green. She lived a hard life on a ranch until May 16th of this year. The plan is to clean fix and paint the old girl. My first day working was a cleaning day. Not the only cleaning for sure but a start. I have a video that I’m not happy with but I will add some pictures.
Clean it? How? First thing I needed to assess is how dirty. If you buy a project that has been sitting outside for an extended time or a 50 year old ranch truck it will be a big job.
I removed all trash and small animal nest material. I swept the floors, dash, engine compartment aprons. I used a small bench broom and dust pan. Then vacuumed the rest. Before I move on if your car is from the Southwest. Do not sweep or vacuum without spraying 1:10 bleach and wear a mask. Hantavirus spreads from mouse poop. For the next step I used a bucket with soapy water. Dish soap or laundry soap is good. A spray bottle of general cleaner. Simple Green is good. A car washing brush and lots of towels. I bought a 52 pack from Costco. Spray, wash, wipe repeat. Don’t worry about water getting in to places. It won’t hurt anything. To be fair my truck was probably in a river or lake at one time. If you can use a hose or pressure washer it will be easier. I would still use the brush and towels.
To be clear I was not getting show ready just getting cleaned up for repairs. When I pull out of the garage for the first time I will prefer a truck that isn’t crazy dirty.
