As work continues on my shop truck, Big Green, progress has been slow. The replacement hubs I bought on eBay do not fit. Torque King has new hubs available, but they are beyond my current budget. To review, the current hubs have eleven of sixteen studs broken and were welded to the brake drum. The combination is stuck together with decades of rust and a Gypsy Curse. The current work is to cut off the drum, grind the rear of the studs flat, and press them out. I estimate one more day. I will apologize now for not getting any pictures, but I will add some to my next post. Using my Craftsman 4 1/2 inch angle grinder with Blue Hawk cut-off discs, there is progress being made. I pressed out four studs from one hub today but the rest need a little more dressing with the grinder. The hubs don’t sit level on my 20-ton shop press, so they wiggle around a little. Using a big press is like winching with a cable, so it can be a little spooky. My New Year’s resolution is to spend eight hours a week in the shop. I am a little short this week, but there has been a noticeable amount of work done. The grinding is fairly labor-intensive. I was slow to leave the house this morning, getting to the shop at six in the morning is easier in the summer for sure. One good thing about being in an industrial area is the lack of any real early-morning noise restrictions. Until next post, that will include pictures, new cars are boring, find and fix an old one.
